Building Early Attuned Relationships (BEARs) — a pilot of an awareness raising project in Wales

Introduction

BEARs is a pilot project based in Wales, supported by National Lottery funding. The aim is to increase knowledge across professional and community domains about:

  • the importance of the first 1000 days (known as the First 1001 Days in England) as a unique and critical period of development, providing a golden opportunity to maximise a baby's potential.
  • the role parent-infant relationships, and relationships with trusted adults more widely, play in making the most of this golden opportunity in a baby's life.
  • practical ideas to support families to build early attuned relationships, and advice on how to identify when to access more support if needed.

The project includes the rollout of new training and resources across Wales centred on Building Early Attuned Relationships (BEARs). The training, aimed at trusted adults working with families during the First 1000 Days, has been co-produced by the Parent-Infant Foundation, parents and professionals, with the baby’s voice central to the content.
